RWLO Title: Gene Structure
Description: Students can look at the genes on each of the 23 different chromosomes in the human genome.
My Course: Intro Biology
Rationale: meets the DNA structure and human genetics requirements.
I will be assigning this as homework. I will ask the student to locate 4 different syndromes or diseases that have appeared in their family. They will describe the trait and locate it on the chromosome.

Description: Presentation of facts about: viruses that cause Influenza, past history, real time update on the distribution and epidemiology of Influenza viruses, vaccination status (with statistics). Rationale: (What need or requirement does this RWLO meet?) Students will understand how viruses can affect our world. They will get to know what our immune system can do and what it cannot do. The updated status of H5N1 virus development will be investigated.
Setting/Delivery: (How will you implement this RWLO - ex. Online? Lab? Presentation? Group work?, etc. If you plan to modify or adapt this RWLO, please include your ideas.) The students will have to research the resources in order to get updated information to present to the classroom, in order to fulfill their presentation requirements. I would like to link this rwlo to other diseases and their current status, so that each student will have a different topic to discuss. In my blackboard site, I will provide NIH-related links that the students will have to access in order to prepare their presentations.

Rationale: meets our habitat objectives
I would group students together so they can investigate and discuss their findings with each other.
I chose this RWLO because it allows my students to investigate and analyze their findings. Then they compare their finding with others across the world. Also, they are able to research objects that they found using internet resources.

I will assign this as a pre-lecture introduction homework. I think the variety of videos offers something to spark a variety of interests and gives a nice introduction to the brain and nervous system

I will use this RWLO after I cover the general information on West Nile virus in the classroom. I will ask the students to skip worksheet A and do worksheets B and C which deal with the real world information.
Why did you choose this RWLO? Students get access to many references in one place. Students get to evaluate the possible method of prevention or spread of the disease.

Description: Students can test the hypothesis that dominant traits are more frequent in the population by observing common human traits and generating class data. The hypothesis can be tested by using the data posted on the website.

Rationale: I will be using this RWLO for two purposes. One is to introduce the scientific method and data analysis. The second purpose is to address a common misconception that dominant traits occur more frequently in a population.
